Four Hidden Pitfalls of Using AI Graphics for Your Business

While AI-generated graphics, such as logos and photos, can give business owners instant gratification and a low-budget solution, there are hidden pitfalls to using them. There is a huge difference between using AI graphics casually, and using them for your business, with the latter potentially costing you far more than you bargained for.

Here are four hidden pitfalls of using AI graphics for your business:

Pitfall 1: Loss of Customer Trust

In its report, Key findings about how Americans view artificial intelligence, the Pew Research Center found that:

  • Americans continue to be wary of AI’s impact on daily life.

  • U.S. adults are generally concerned about AI’s effect on creativity and relationships, even if they are open to using it for data analysis.

Using AI as a "quick fix" to create graphics for your business can directly damage customer trust.

The Salty Otter restaurant in Santa Cruz, California, learned this the hard way. The restaurant owner used AI to generate their logo and even tried tweaking it. However, customers still spotted the tell-tale signs of AI, resulting in a wave of negative attention for the business.

For any business, first impressions matter, and using AI-generated graphics can leave a bad taste in a potential customer's mouth.

Your customers might ask themselves: "If they’re willing to cut corners on their logo (the face of their business), where else are they cutting corners?"

Pitfall 2: AI Graphics: Generic and Soulless

You may have noticed that AI-generated graphics and stock photos tend to have a distinct "look." Even the photo-realistic ones feel a bit "off." That's because AI relies on web data, algorithms, and math to spot patterns and make predictions.

When you ask AI to generate a logo, it looks at its training data and guesses the most likely pattern to apply. The result? Generic, soulless graphics. Why? Because AI doesn't understand design, it doesn't have feelings, and lacks the taste and aesthetic intuition of a human designer. All it knows is pure, raw math.

To show you what we mean, take a look at this example for Busy Bee Grooming:

Side-by-side Busy Bee Grooming logo comparison: Left logo designed 100% by a human; right logo generated by AI with a prompt.

On the left is a 100% human-made logo created by Lily, our Graphic Designer:

  • Simple and clean: It isn't cluttered with unnecessary detail.

  • Thoughtful typography: The font was chosen specifically to give a sense of motion ("busy") while remaining easy to read.

  • Smart integration: The bumblebee, a key part of the brand identity, is seamlessly and visually incorporated into the dog graphic.

  • Balanced palette: The colors were purposefully selected to feel calming, cheerful, and welcoming.

On the right is the logo generated by AI:

  • Overly complex: It looks cluttered with too much fine detail, which causes major scaling issues (especially when printing).

  • Uninspired text: The font is okay, but it feels out of place.

  • Awkward composition: The bee and dog are mashed together in a way that feels unnatural and unappealing.

  • Flat colors: The color scheme is fine, but lacks depth and intention.

  • Impractical details: The puppy is the best part of the image, but it would still require heavy retouching because the AI added random shadows and highlights that could make printing difficult.

Sure, you could keep prompting the AI to try again. But you’re just gambling that it won't ruin what you liked in the previous version. It’s essentially a game of design roulette.

Pitfall 3:  Printing Issues

If you run a brick-and-mortar business, you'll eventually need to print your graphics. Whether it’s a large poster or a small business card, your logo needs to look crisp, clear, and recognizable at any scale.

AI graphics set your business up for major complications when creating print assets. They tend to feature too many fine details and color gradients, making them hard to scale down or print cleanly. Plus, any weird AI glitches will only get magnified the bigger you print!

Kerri, our Creative Director, broke this down in her blog post, Three Point Logo Checklistwhich covers everything you need to know about logos and print readiness.

You’ve probably already noticed some of these classic AI oddities:

  • "What is that fruit in the background? Is that a watermelon-strawberry hybrid?"

  • "Why does that person have six fingers?"

  • "Why is that text in the background written in gibberish?"

Pitfall 4: Trademark and Copyright Risks

As a business owner, you may want to protect your assets by trademarking and copyrighting your graphics, especially your logo.

While you can technically trademark an AI-generated logo, you cannot copyright an AI-generated logo.

According to the U.S. Copyright Office Policy Guidance, copyright protection requires the Human Authorship Requirement:

"The U.S. Copyright Office will register an original work of authorship, provided that the work was created by a human being. The copyright law only protects 'the fruits of intellectual labor' that 'are founded in the creative powers of the mind'... Because copyright law is limited to 'original intellectual conceptions of the author,' the Office will refuse to register a claim if it determines that a human being did not create the work."

Federal courts have consistently upheld this rule: only artwork created by a human being can receive copyright protection.

So, What Can You Do to Avoid the Pitfalls of Using AI Graphics?

We know that when you’re starting out or running a small business, you have to stretch every dollar. But if you’re serious about building a lasting brand, taking the AI shortcut might cost you more in the long run.

If you want to avoid these AI pitfalls, here is a practical path forward:

For Photography or Pre-Made Graphics Use reputable stock photo platforms (like iStock, which explicitly bans AI-generated images in its standard library). Then, as your budget allows, phase out the stock images for original, custom brand photography or graphics.

For Logos & Custom Graphics If you want to use AI, then pick the smart middle ground. Use AI to generate ideas that you are happy with, then find a professional design agency, like EO, that won't use AI to generate your final graphics, but will use your AI-generated ideas as another source of inspiration. This will allow the designers to have a good idea of what you want, which will reduce the turnaround time, and therefore minimize the costs. This way, you can stay under your budget, get a final design that will be 100% human-made, and avoid the pitfalls of using AI graphics.
